Work Like You Own It

GET YOUR OFFICIAL WORK LIKE YOU OWN IT MERCHANDISE!

This blog is dedicated to everyone who "works like they own it"! Work like you own it is an approach to one's job that is shown through pride, passion, and professionalism. Going above and beyond the customer's expectations is the norm.

Thinking of ways to "wow" both your internal customers (co-workers) and your external customers is the purpose. As often as possible, our goal is to collect as many "wow stories" as possible, and then spotlight them here in our blog. Our goal is to encourage it, recognize it, and celebrate it! If you catch someone working like they own it, or if you want to share how you work like you own it, then share it with us at: info@worklikeyouownit.com

  • NorthBay Medical Center

Northbay Health in Fairfield, California is an exceptional healthcare organization. I can spend hours recounting several stories of how team members went above and beyond to create memorable patient experiences. One example, however, has stuck in my mind ever since I heard it. A homeless man, who was always seen with his beloved pet dog, was rushed to the emergency room. Even though his dog was not allowed inside the hospital, one of the hospital’s ...

  • Shake Shack

During a recent day-trip to Baltimore, my family decided to have lunch at Shake Shack. While the team obviously shows great care in selecting quality ingredients and preparing delicious meals, the service is what stands out. It was lunchtime, so the place was packed. Yet, it took us less than five minutes to zip through the line to order our food.  Key Point: They value my time. Then, our two year old son decided ...

  • Shore Lodge

There is something to be said for “owning” your work and being exceptional, regardless of who you are serving. Some people…the special ones…are always looking for ways to show their heart through taking care of others. Recently, I was visiting the Shore Lodge resort in beautiful McCall, Idaho. During my last day there, one of the spa employees, Samantha, came to the lobby and asked a manager where she could find some candy for ...

  • Baylor Medical Center at McKinney

To me, one of the most beautiful things on Earth is seeing an organization that truly “gets it”. Specifically, I’m referring to those businesses that clearly see the link between senior leadership vision, employee engagement and strong customer service. Baylor Medical Center at McKinney(BMCM) is the embodiment of all those qualities. Senior Leadership The President, Scott, is regularly seen interacting with staff throughout the hospital and knows everyone’s name. Keep in mind that this hospital has over 500 employees. Then, the CNO/COO, ...

  • The Cakery

When it comes to service excellence, the word “consistency” is a key ingredient, and the Cakery is the embodiment of it.  The Cakery is the quintessential neighborhood staple in suburban Maryland led by a husband and wife, who are the owners. The husband is the pastry chef, and the wife is the bakery manager/whatever else needs to be done. One of the things that I really appreciate is the consistency of Gail. Besides being a co-owner, she is also the cashier. It ...

  • Delta Flight (Captain & Crew)

I love to see mastery in action. Recently, I was on board a Delta flight (#677 from Atlanta to St. Thomas - May 5, 2013), and Capt. Steve Howell was at the helm. As passengers were boarding, I noticed that he was giving a genuine and welcoming greeting to each passenger. Of course, I've seen that before on other flights, but something about the way he did it made you "feel" like he was genuinely ...

  • Executive Shoeshine (Charlotte Douglas Int'l Airport)

Whenever I travel through the Charlotte International Airport, I always make a point to visit Executive Shoeshine. They consistently do an amazing jog on shining my shoes. Note: The key word here is "consistently". I wouldn't be excited if the shoeshine was spectacular every now and then. Or even if a particular employee did an exceptional job. No. All of the staff is exceptional EVERY time. The best way for me to describe the experience ...

  • 7-Eleven Convenience Store

Be Consistent. One of the true hallmarks of being a professional is steady consistency. Regardless if it’s busy or not. Or whether you have a headache or not…or even if your co-worker and/or boss is annoying you. True professionals have the uncanny ability to block out the “noise” and do what they are supposed to do, whether they feel like it or not. Brad is no exception.  He is a cashier, who works at a ...
